Complementary excursion to Choirokitia and Lefkara (16 November, 16:00 - )
Larnaca district features some of the most picturesque sites and villages in Cyprus.
Our first visit will be made to Choirokitia Archeological site. This is a well preserved settlement dating back to the Neolithic Era. Characteristic cylindrical shaped dwellings have been reconstructed near the settlement. The dwellings have been fitted with replicas of household objects found inside the originals inhabited during the 7th to the 4th millennium B.C. It is one of the most important prehistoric sites as its remains and the finds from the excavations there have thrown much light on the evolution of human society in this key region.
During the second part of our trip, we will visit Lefkara village. Lefkara has a renowned heritage in folkloric arts and cuisine. The hospitality, the rare beauty of the landscape and the tradition of the embroidery craft and silverware are only some of the reasons that attract thousands of people from all around the world.
Lefkara is famous all over the world for its hand-made lace which since 2009 is in UNESCO’s representative List of Intangible Culture Heritage of Humanity. The figures feature symmetry, perspective and light whereas represent the Cyprus tradition as well as the individual personality and mood. In addition, the art of silverware, still flourishing today in Lefkara, offers fine works of art to silver lovers. During our walk, we will have the opportunity to visit lace and silverware shops. Strolling in the narrow cobbled streets, we will be able to see the connected yet distinctive constructions which are made of the distinctive “Lefkara Stone” and look like fortresses. The carved arc is one of the most common characteristics of Lefkara traditional architecture. In the heart of the village, there is the church of the Holy Cross which dates back to the 14th century AD. The big silver cross, which bears a piece of the Holy Wood, is kept in the unseen crypt found in the shrine.
During our trip, we will also visit the Museum of Folk Art Embroidery and Silversmithing. The museum is a 19th century mansion where time has stopped and everything reminds the visitor of the past. The pride of the museum, however, is the old collection of the 19th century ‘Lefkaritiko Lace’ embroideries.
